The itinerary includes days ranging from approximately 6 km to 16 km, with moderate pace and regular stops. The biggest challenge is often cumulative fatigue from consecutive early mornings, sleeping in oasis communities, and several days exposed to sun and sand.

Yes, compared with shorter treks, the additional day allows more time inside remote areas of the park, slower pacing, and deeper contact with local communities. Many travelers choose longer crossings because they prefer immersion over completing the route as quickly as possible.

The trek is moderately to quite physically demanding. You’ll be walking over sand dunes, which requires significantly more effort than walking on firm ground, and crossing freshwater lagoons on foot. Distances vary by day but can be substantial. A reasonable base level of fitness is recommended, and you should be comfortable walking for several hours in heat. Trekking poles can help considerably on the softer terrain.

Previous trekking experience is not strictly required, but travelers should feel comfortable walking long distances, waking up early, and sleeping in rustic conditions for several days. People looking for a lighter introduction may prefer the shorter 2-day or 3-day options.

Can the trek change because of rain, weather, or lagoon conditions?

Rain rarely cancels the trek. In the dunes region, showers are usually short and isolated, even during the rainy season. Our local team monitors the weather and trail conditions daily. As this is a nature-based experience, the itinerary may be adapted according to local conditions, always prioritizing safety and the best possible experience. In cases of heavier rain or unusual weather, the guide may adjust the route, timing, or activities on the day.

Do I have to walk with my bag?

Accepted Answer

You will carry your own day backpack during the trek, so we strongly recommend packing only the essentials—ideally keeping the total weight around 4 kg. Lightweight clothing, sunscreen, water, and personal items are usually enough for the days on the trail. The transfer of one additional piece of luggage per traveler is already included in the price of your trekking package, so you do not need to carry all your belongings during the expedition. If you would like to send more than one extra bag, there is an additional fee of R$ 50 per extra piece, payable in cash on-site.

Can I store extra luggage while on the trek?

Yes. The transfer or storage of one piece of luggage per traveler is already included in the price of your trekking package, so you do not need to carry all your belongings during the expedition. This is especially useful for travelers continuing their trip through Brazil with larger suitcases. If you would like to leave or transfer more than one bag per person, there is an additional fee of R$50 per extra piece, payable directly on-site in cash.

Are round-trip transfers from São Luís included in the trekking package?

Accepted Answer

The base price includes the expedition itself: guide, accommodation, and all meals during the trek. Round-trip transfers to and from São Luís are not included in the base price. However, we can arrange private transfers for you, and these are usually included in our custom proposals. For travelers looking for more budget-friendly options, shared transfers or buses also work well.

How do I get to São Luís from Santo Amaro at the end of the trek?

You have a couple of options. A private transfer can be booked directly through our platform, which is the most comfortable and straightforward option. If you prefer a more budget-friendly route, shared vans depart daily at 4 AM and 1 PM (booked onsite).

How early do the days usually start during the expedition?

Trekking days commonly begin very early (sometimes before sunrise) to avoid stronger heat and make longer walking sections more comfortable. Early departures are a normal part of Lençóis Maranhenses crossings and also create opportunities to watch the sunrise over the dunes.

How many people are assigned to one guide?

We aim to maintain a personalized experience throughout the trek. One guide is assigned for every 8 participants. If your group is larger than 8, a second guide joins at no additional cost to you.

Question 14

Do the guides speak English?

Accepted Answer

Most of our guides are not fluent in English, though they are highly knowledgeable about the park and the route. Where possible, we do our best to assign an English-speaking guide to international groups. If having a bilingual guide is important to you, we can arrange a dedicated translator for an additional cost per day. Please let us know at the time of booking so we can confirm availability and prices.

I'm traveling solo. How can I secure my trip?

Accepted Answer

Solo travelers have a couple of good options. If you would like more certainty and the best possible rate, we recommend contacting our team to ask about departures that already have other travelers confirmed. All departures are confirmed from the moment of booking. However, if you choose a date without other travelers yet, the price may be based on the solo rate until more people join the group. To secure your trip, you can confirm your booking by paying the lowest available rate for that departure. If no one else joins up to 15 days before the start date, you can either change to another available date or proceed with the cancellation. In case of cancellation, a 5% fee will be deducted to cover credit card processing costs.

Is there free time during the hike?

Yes. Days typically start early to make the most of the cooler morning hours and avoid the intense midday sun. On most days, there is free time between approximately 12 PM and 3 PM, giving you a chance to explore the area around your accommodation, read, or rest in a hammock before the afternoon continues.

Is there shade during the hike?

Very little. Most of the route takes place in open dunes with limited natural shade, meaning exposure to sun and heat can be intense during parts of the day. UV-protective clothing, hats, hydration systems, sunglasses, and sunscreen are strongly recommended to make the experience safer and more comfortable.

Will I be able to wash my clothes during the trek?

The itinerary involves several nights in remote communities with basic infrastructure. Washing clothes may be possible in some locations, but travelers should not expect laundry services. Lightweight and quick-drying clothing is strongly recommended because repeated use over multiple days is common.

Will my feet be constantly wet during the trek?

Accepted Answer

Depending on seasonality, travelers may spend time walking through shallow lagoons and wet sand. Shoes and feet can become wet during parts of the route, especially when lagoons are fuller. Quick-drying sandals, extra socks, and lightweight footwear are usually much more comfortable than heavy trekking boots in Lençóis Maranhenses conditions.

What is the difference between a trek and a classic tour in Lençóis Maranhenses?

There are three travel styles in the region: Classic Tours (Santo Amaro / Barreirinhas / Atins) stay in hotels or pousadas, access dunes and lagoons via 4×4 and speedboat with little walking, are strictly private and fully flexible, and are recommended for a relaxed pace, limited mobility, or older travelers. Trekking Expeditions cross the park on foot, access remote lagoons closed to vehicles, sleep inside the park in hammocks at native oasis communities or in tents, run primarily as shared group departures on fixed dates, and require moderate-to-high physical stamina. Route of Emotions (Rota das Emoções) combines Lençóis with the Parnaíba Delta and Jericoacoara, across three states.

Are drinks included in the package?

Accepted Answer

Mineral water, soft drinks, and beer are not included in the package. You can purchase these directly from the families hosting you at each support point. Bringing cash (ideally in small denominations) is strongly recommended, as card payments are generally not accepted.

Are meals included, and what type of food is served?

Accepted Answer

Meals at the support points are simple, hearty, and home-cooked. Expect dishes built around rice, beans, and pasta, accompanied by a variety of animal proteins such as free-range chicken, goat, pork, fish, and duck. Availability varies depending on local conditions and what the host families have to hand—part of the charm of eating in the oases.

Can I stay in the dunes at night to see the stars?

Yes. The family houses and campsites are located inside the park, where there is almost no light pollution, making it a great place to see the night sky. The guide usually takes the group to the dunes for sunset, and you can often watch the stars appear as it gets dark. For safety, we recommend not walking too far without the guide, as the dunes can look very similar at night. Also, pack a light jacket, as temperatures can drop after sunset and before dawn.

How does electricity and the internet work in the Lençóis accommodations?

Electricity in the family houses inside the oases is limited. It usually comes from solar panels or fuel generators, which are turned on only for a few hours in the evening. Power outlets are also limited, so we recommend bringing a fully charged power bank. There is no regular cell signal inside the National Park. Some houses may offer satellite Wi-Fi for an extra fee, paid directly on site, but the connection is usually slow. If you are camping, there will be no electricity or internet available at night.

What happens if I get injured?

All guides are trained in first aid and take preventive measures throughout the trek. For minor injuries, evacuation can be arranged by quad bike, 4×4, or other available transport depending on location. In more serious situations, local emergency services are contacted immediately to coordinate rescue and transfer to the nearest medical facility. Guides carry communication equipment at all times to ensure help can be reached when needed.

Will I have time to swim in lagoons during the trek?

Lagoon stops are part of the daily rhythm of the trek and offer time to rest, cool down, and enjoy the landscape between hiking sections. Swimming is completely optional, so you can simply relax by the lagoons if you prefer. The condition of the lagoons depends on seasonality, with fuller lagoons usually occurring between May and September.

I have dietary restrictions. Can you accommodate them?

We can accommodate a range of dietary requirements, including vegetarian and vegan diets and common food allergies. Do I need to be vaccinated to travel to Brazil?

Accepted Answer

The Brazilian government doesn’t require foreign tourists to be vaccinated, but the Ministry of Health advises that visitors arrive in the country with a complete vaccination schedule for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, rubella, and measles. For extra safety, getting shots for yellow fever and hepatitis A/B is also recommended.
