  • Please note: This is a demanding 10-day mountain expedition (around 90 km, with five nights camping on the summit) for travelers in good physical condition. The route crosses into Venezuela: a valid passport is required for all nationalities and the summit sits at roughly 2,800 m. Weather follows the Venezuelan seasons and can shift quickly — pack for cold and wet. Departures generally run between January and April.

Itinerary

Day 1

Boa Vista → Santa Elena de Uairen

  • RoadBoa Vista → Venezuela border · 220 km · ~3 h · depart 8:30 am

We meet at a hotel in Boa Vista at 8:30 am for the briefing, then enjoy the scenic BR-174 road to the Venezuelan border, complete customs, and overnight in Santa Elena de Uairen. Our Mount Roraima hike is just beginning!

Day 2

Santa Elena de Uairen → Paraitepuy → First campsite

  • 4x4→ Paraitepuy community · 100 km
  • Trek→ Kukenan River camp · 15 km · 4–5 h

You cross the stunning Gran Sabana scenery to the Paraitepuy community, then trek to the camps on the banks of the Kukenan River for an overnight in tents under a starry sky. At dawn, Mount Roraima appears ahead, inviting another day of trekking.

Day 3

Trek to the base of the mountain

  • Trek→ base camp · 8 km · ~5 h · mostly uphill

In the morning, hike towards the base — mostly uphill. By the afternoon you settle at base camp, dazzled by the imposing wall of the tepui that defies description.

Day 4

Climbing to the summit (La Rampa)

The path from bottom to top is unlike any other — one of the most beautiful moments of the Mount Roraima hike, with stops for photos and rest among gardens of bromeliads, orchids and small birds. You pass igarapes and the waterfall at ‘Paso das Lagrimas’, greeted near the top by the Makunaima Monument and the ‘Guardians of the Mountain’. Weather is unstable up here, with daily variations in temperature and rain.

Day 5

Valley of Crystals / Triple Border Point / Coati

Full immersion on the summit begins, starting with the surreal Vale dos Cristais. We pass the iconic Triple Border Point — a white pyramidal landmark marking the meeting of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana — then spend the night on the Brazilian side at Coati, an enigmatic shelter between two huge rocks with a hall open to the sky and a small lagoon. Those who wish can walk ~500 m to Paredao for views over the forest of the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Reserve, home of the Ingariko people.

Day 6

Lake Gladys

One of the most hidden and enigmatic places of the whole experience. Lake Gladys is indescribable — local lore even speaks of a portal to another dimension. A full-day out-and-back (about 3 hours each way) carrying only a daypack, sleeping again at the same camp.

Day 7

Back towards the mountain entrance

  • Trekvia Triple Point & El Foso → entrance camp · 15 km · ~8 h

On the way back, a brief stop at the Triple Border Point, then at El Foso — a place that awakens the child in everyone. By evening we reach the camp near the entrance to Mount Roraima for the night.

Day 8

Jacuzzi Pools / La Ventana / Maverick Rock

A lighter hiking day (around 6 km, daypack only) to Maverick Rock — the highest point of Mount Roraima at about 2,875 m — with sweeping views over the Gran Sabana. Continue to the Jacuzzi Pools and the La Ventana lookout, facing Mount Kukenan (Father of the Winds) and its waterfalls, then Salto Catedral and Paso de Los Cristales. Sleep again at the same camp.

Day 9

Descend to the Tek River campsite

  • Descentsummit → base (~4 h) → river camp (+3 h)

The day to say goodbye to the House of Makunaima. We descend to the base (about 4 hours), rest and snack, then continue another 3 hours to the next camp — with the chance of the starriest sky of the trip.

Day 10

Tek River → Paraitepuy → Santa Elena → Boa Vista

A final hike to Paraitepuy, then 4×4 to Santa Elena, customs at the border, and the road to Boa Vista — arriving late afternoon or early evening, completing our Mount Roraima hike at the same hotel where it began.
