Vale do Pati trek: How many days do you really need?

The Vale do Pati is a 12,300-hectare valley inside Chapada Diamantina National Park, in the state of Bahia. In 2010, Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism named it the best trek in the country and is considered by many one of the world’s great hikes. The Vale do Pati trek is a point-to-point walk with no road to the valley floor: you arrive on foot and sleep in the homes of the families who live there.

Most routes begin in the village of Guiné and run 3 to 5 days, covering roughly 15 km a day (about 35 km over 3 days, up to 59 km over 5). The climbs are real. Morro do Castelo reaches close to 1,600 m, the highest point in the park, gained through an 800-meter cave you cross by headlamp. Between the ascents, you cool off at Cachoeira dos Funis, a 30 m fall with a natural pool; at Cachoeirão, a 260 m canyon lookout where more than 20 waterfalls appear after rain; and at Poço da Árvore.

Only a handful of families still live in Vale do Pati, and since 1997, they have hosted hikers in simple homes with proper beds, shared bathrooms, cold showers, and home-cooked meals. There is no mobile signal or Wi-Fi in the valley, and power comes from solar panels, so the Vale do Pati trek doubles as a genuine digital detox. These homestays are the only accommodation inside the park, which converts into income for the community that protects it.

The trek runs year-round. The dry season (May to September) brings stable trails and cool nights, ideal for the long days; the rainy season (October to April) fills the waterfalls and turns the valley green, with muddier paths.

Not sure which window fits your trip? Our local guides set the route and pace to your fitness, and you can pair the hike with the wider Chapada Diamantina tours for caves, viewpoints, and the blue pools of Poço Azul and Poço Encantado.
