Brazil has more than 7,400 km of Atlantic coastline, but the diving most travelers come for sits inside two protected marine parks. Fernando de Noronha lies 354 km off the Pernambuco coast, a 21-island archipelago that UNESCO has listed since 2001, with visibility that reaches 40 m. Abrolhos, 70 km off southern Bahia, protects the largest coral reefs in the South Atlantic. Scuba diving in Brazil really comes down to choosing between these two.
Diving in Fernando de Noronha runs all year, with water around 27°C and the calmest seas and best visibility from March to July. On a single dive you can pass reef sharks, hawksbill and green turtles, rays, moray eels, and the resident spinner dolphins that gather in Baía dos Golfinhos, one of the largest resident populations on Earth. Wrecks, caves, and rocky canyons give certified divers depth and structure, while complete beginners start with a supervised baptism dive to about 12 m.
Abrolhos is a different kind of dive. It was Brazil’s first marine national park, created in 1983, and its 882 km² of reef hold all 18 coral species found in the South Atlantic, including the endemic brain coral Mussismilia braziliensis. From July to November, thousands of humpback whales arrive to breed, and divers often hear their song underwater. Most trips here run as a liveaboard, sleeping on the boat for several days of diving far from the mainland.
You do not need a certificate to start. A Discovery Scuba Diving session takes a complete beginner underwater the same day, while the Open Water course (minimum age 10) earns a license you keep for life. Certified divers can add night dives, deep dives, and advanced courses.
